The best time to dive in Vietnam, region by region

Vietnam's long coastline has two monsoon patterns. The trick is matching your travel month to the right coast.

There is no single best month for diving in Vietnam. The central coast (Nha Trang, Cham Islands) and Con Dao are best from about March into the summer, while Phu Quoc in the south is best from about November to May. March to May is the overlap when you can combine both.

Month by month

Region Best months Avoid Notes
Nha Trang Mar–Oct Nov–Jan Clearest water usually Jun–Jul
Phu Quoc Nov–May Jul–Sep (poorer visibility) Calm dry-season seas
Con Dao Mar–Sep Oct–Feb Rough seas, cancellations off season
Cham Islands Late Mar–Aug Monsoon months Access restricted in monsoon

Sources: several dive guides (Rough Guides, Vietnam National Authority of Tourism and dive operators); they differ by a few weeks, so confirm conditions with your operator before booking.

Combining coasts: fly into Ho Chi Minh City in March–May, dive Phu Quoc first, then head up to Nha Trang. Both are usually in season.

Water temperature

The water stays warm all year – roughly 26–30°C depending on region and season. A 3 mm wetsuit or a long rash guard is usually enough.
